Sound system’s power ratings are quoted in a variety of terms, often misleading, and not all in the same units. The type of event being organised will determine what kind of system is required, i.e. how loud it needs to be and what range/coverage is required. At Expression we take time to ensure you get the system that is exactly right for your event, so please call to discuss your needs. The “suitable for” figure applies to a loud (+110db) volume level, equivalent to a very loud nightclub environment, and assumes a room size that would comfortably hold that number of people.
The power rating is the r.m.s. rating of the speakers, these are coupled to amplification rated at substantially above this figure, ensuring that the speakers can be run at their correct power rating without clipping the amplifiers, thus distorting the audio. For example, the 4.6kw stereo bass heavy pa actually uses amps with a power rating of 7kw, with peaks of that figure.
Wide dispersion systems are for when volume is not as important as even coverage, and will have less low frequency response but cover a wider area with sound, ensuring everybody hears what’s going on!
As a general guide, most sound system companies tend to use the peak amplifier output as the system size, giving an exaggerated figure. We give a more accurate figure of what the system will be doing at any given time, not the maximum it can handle. In other words, to compare our systems power in real terms to those of most other sound companies, add one third to the power rating!
